1964 Porsche 904 Carrera GTS

This 1964 Porsche 904 Carrera GTS is one of just over 100 examples produced during a two-year run to homologate Porsche’s first fiberglass-bodied sports racing car for FIA Group 3 competition. Chassis 904-051 was invoiced on February 4, 1964, and sold new by Brumos Porsche to Florida physician and racing driver David Lane, who campaigned the car in SCCA events and at the 1964 Bahamas Speed Week, where it recorded two third-place finishes. The car later achieved a fifth-place class result at the 1965 2000km Daytona and went on to contest the 1965 12 Hours of Sebring and the 1966 24 Hours of Daytona, retiring early from both endurance races.

In 1967, the car was acquired by a North Carolina owner who retained stewardship for two decades, participating in Porsche Parade events before selling it to a Florida collector in 1988. It subsequently underwent a refurbishment by marque specialist Kevin Jeanette, including a repaint in its original Signal Red, before joining the Matsuda Collection in Japan in 1991. The 904 later changed hands in 2006 and was acquired by a Danish collector in 2015 before being purchased by the current owner in 2023.

Power is supplied by a replacement 2.0-liter Type 587/3 four-cam flat-four reportedly built by Capricorn Group and featuring twin-plug ignition and dual Weber carburetors. The drivetrain includes a five-speed manual transaxle, while chassis equipment consists of four-wheel disc brakes, coilover independent suspension, and silver-painted 15″ wheels. The cockpit is fitted with fixed-back seats trimmed in blue velour.

This 904 Carrera GTS is now offered accompanied by its removed original Type 587/3 engine, a copy of the factory invoice, historical photographs, an FIA Historic Technical Passport, an owner’s manual, and a tool kit.
